Avalon Myanmar Bagan to Bhamo
This river cruise really does deliver beyond expectations.
The Avalon Myanmar is only 2 years old and was designed especially to cruise the Irrawaddy and with a draft of only just over a meter it can go where others fear to venture. It is comfortable bordering towards luxury and the staff are a joy. Fun attentive caring and ever watchful. Whilst guests are disembarking along sometimes steep steps sometimes uneven or muddy river banks they will always have an eye out and a helping hand. We made many stops along the river wandering up to markets monasteries villages and multiple Pagodas Buddha's and the amazing Bagan. Always with a view of the ever changing life along the river. Elephants working the teak, bamboo rafts with people living on them as they pass down river, wash day, fishing boats, teeming local life.
The boat wasn't full on our cruise only 25 it will take 36 but it is spacious with plenty of room in the lounge dining room and sundeck you never feel comprised for space.
The food was good with an interesting mix of local dishes and western cuisine. I tended towards local as the kitchen seemed more confident with these but all were good quality ingredients and the wines flowed freely. Once again the staff in the dining room were exceptional. Many highly qualified in sciences business and languages but apparently the money is in hospitality.
Mark our cruise director a New Zealander has been working with Avalon for a number of years developing new routes had designed the basis of this cruise and with Dorothy the local guide (obviously not her real name) had a wealth of information and local contacts that enabled us to visit homes workshops villages schools monasteries and take us really off the tourist track. We also watched a couple of good films about recent history and events in Myanmar in the ships lounge popcorn included giving a good background of the uprising leading to the current democratic elections. Dorothy could act as our interpreter and chat to local children stall holders and families. The people are very friendly and quite curious both of the boat and the foreign visitors. She even helped out with the erratic ATMs that were rare and often out of order.
We saw some stunning sights sunset over Bagan. A wealth of golden Pagodas we rode in oxcarts travelled in the local lorry transport watched monks visiting the village houses collecting alms and in the North the effects of the proximity of the Chinese border.
A wealth of unforgettable experiences that we could never have achieved on our own all from the luxury of your floating hotel.
incidentally the Hotel in Yangon where we had 3nts before the cruise was the Shangri-La a good chain and perfect base to see the city.
We were the only Brits taking this cruise Canadians Hong Kong and mainly USA If you interested in Myanmar and the East don't miss this marvelous experience.

Avalon River Cruises in Myanmar
Just Returned from travelling south to north on an Avalon River Cruise. Our cruise director Dorothy was truely amazing. She embraced the Burmese culture and shared with us her natural therapies and many other wonderful things. She also did a lot of translating when we needed to know something or to buy handcrafts etc.
From the moment we boarded the ship until the day we left we all had the best time ever. Unbelievable sights to see as you cruise along the river from the comfort of a brand new purpose built ship that had every imaginable comfort you could want. I also loved the Loccotane product they had on board. What made the trip so enjoyable was the amazing staff on board. Thank you Avalon for one of the best river cruises ever

Avalon Waterways Myanmar River Cruise
My husband and I have just completed the 14 day Irrawaddy River cruise with Avalon Waterways. We travelled upstream from Yangon to Bhamo. We didn't know much about mysterious Myanmar, previously known as Burma, before we left and found it to be a beautiful, charming country. The cruise is very well organized and the boat is fabulous. Sailing up the Irrawaddy in this wonderful river boat is truly magical. Each day a tour is organized and the crew and cruise director are both attentive and helpful, going out of their way to meet everyone's needs and requirements. We've learnt so much about this amazing, unspoiled country and its warm and welcoming people.
Just can't wait for our next Avalon River Cruise.

Avalon Cruise the Irrawaddy Downstream
My wife & I did this trip in September, down stream & including Inle Lake. I rate this trip with Avalon as 15 out of 10. A truly excellent, well organised, most enjoyable throughout food excellent. The crew, guide were extremely friendly, knowledgeable & more than helpful to any needs that was required.
All the shore excursions went above & beyond the expected.
If you take this trip take along some school equipment soccer balls, books, pencils anything you would use in a school, they are gratefully appreciated by the schools we visited.
Even the weather was great.
It is very difficult to find a negative maybe to many Temples, Pagodas however they were very beautiful & memorable, this was only a minor negative.
I am in my 70's & found no problem on the shore excursions, they laid on transport if the walks were a bit difficult.
Again a truly magnificent trip from start to unfortunately the finish.

It has now been almost a month since we returned from our visit to Myanmar. I have many lovely and interesting memories of the trip. My favorite part of the trip was the time on the Paukan.

I wanted to write to you to let you know how much I appreciated the kindness and friendliness of your crew. They were always cheerful and helpful. They were a wonderful help to me getting on and off the ship, up the river bank, and even helping me take off and put on my shoes!

But most especially, I want to thank you. You are an amazing ship manager. Your creativity in helping us celebrate Christmas away from home, including having Christmas dinner on the upstairs lounge, and your inspirational leadership of the crew in helping them learn Christmas songs to sing to us was really impressive.

But mostly I want to thank you for helping care for my husband Harold Beebout when he was sick on the last day. I will never forget your kindness, compassion, and concern. You are the best!

Paukan cruise on the Ayeyarwady: a delight
On our Myanmar exploration our agent booked us a 2-night cruise with Paukan, starting from Mandalay and finishing at Bagan. The boat (Paukan 2007) was a classic riverboat, beautifully appointed, with a comfortable cabin (and bed) and ensuite facilities. Our cruise had three stops to explore - at Mingon, Sagaing and Yangabo (a pottery village - fascinating). The ship's service manager and guide was well-informed. Food on board was outstanding, and the evening entertainment (classical dancing and 101 uses for a longyyi) were most interesting. Altogether a lovely and relaxing experience. However we were not sure how we might fare on a longer cruise - three days was fine, but more might be a little claustrophobic, and to be honest the river scenery is not that exciting (though there is plenty of interesting activity to watch for - commercial boats, fishing, wildlife). But if you are planning a tour of Myanmar you should certainly consider this trip, not least as it's the nicest way to get between Mandalay and Bagan.
